What are the conditions of possibility for modernist and postmodernist literature and culture? What social, political, formal, scientific, and technological developments must be factored into productive encounters with the literature of the new? This course explores such questions in literary and theoretical texts, as well as in art, film, and architecture, to experience the new from crossdisciplinary and transnational perspectives. Course credit exclusions: AP/EN 3132 3.00, AP/EN 3135 3.00 (prior to Fall 2011).

No examinations or tests collectively worth more than 20% of the final grade in a course will be given during the final 14 calendar days of classes in a term.
