Examines fundamental principles of language structure and interpretation. The focus is on the core areas, specifically, phonology, morphology, and syntax, but a brief survey of phonetics, semantics, language acquisition, historical linguistics, and language variation is also offered. Data and analytic exercises from a wide range of the world's languages is used for illustration. Course credit exclusions: GL/EN 2605 6.00, GL/LIN 2605 6.00.
