This course examines major sociological issues in the Middle East and North Africa. It privileges a comparative analysis framework to allow students to develop an informed and multilayered knowledge of the region. It discusses these issues by adopting a three-pronged approach - a study of its historical, sociological and cultural aspects - while emphasizing the way by which they produce their alternative modernity.

No examinations or tests collectively worth more than 20% of the final grade in a course will be given during the final 14 calendar days of classes in a term.
