This course analyses issues and policies associated with minority status in Canada from an interdisciplinary perspective. Using International Human Rights principles as a framework, the course examines both inferiorized and stigmatized minorities, the forms of prejudice and discrimination responsible for their unequal treatment and disadvantaged life conditions, as well as strategies for change designed to gain recognition for minority rights to dignity, power and equality. Minorities such as women, the aged, aboriginal peoples, racialized minorities, immigrants/refugees, and gays and lesbians will be examined in this context. No examinations or tests collectively worth more than 20% of the final grade in a course will be given during the final 14 calendar days of classes in a term.
