Metaphysics concerns such issues as the nature of reality, the existence of contingent and necessary truths, universals, perception and the nature of the external world. Prerequisite: At least one of AP/PHIL 2110 3.00, AP/PHIL 2080 3.00 or AP/PHIL 2170 3.00. Course credit exclusion: GL/PHIL 3985 3.00.

    Expanded Course Description

Metaphysics concerns such issues as the nature of reality, the existence of contingent and necessary truths, universals, perception and the nature of the external world. This course will represent an historical introduction to questions in metaphysics from the ancient Greeks to the 20th century.

    Weighting of Course

There will be one mid-term assignment for 40% of the term’s grade. At the end of the term each student will hand in (on-line) a paper on a subject related to the course worth 40% of the terms grade. There is also a final assignment test worth 20% of the term’s grade.

    Organization of the Course

The class will be presented in lecture format, three hours a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays 1PM to 2:30PM. Office hours are Tuesday 2:30 via Moodle Message and Zoom. Communication via Moodle Message is preferred.

    Course Learning Objectives

A general familiarity with the main themes in Metaphysics from the classical period until today.
