An introduction to the study of language as a social phenomenon. Topics covered include language varieties; stereotypes and social identity; language, culture and thought; communicative competence; bilingualism and diglossia; languages in contact; language and social deprivation; and language planning and language policy. PRIOR TO FALL 2013: Course credit exclusion: GL/EN 3632 3.00, GL/LIN 3632 3.00.
