This course examines theory and research on punishment. Attention is paid to the roles of both state and non-state agencies, institutions, and professions in punishing subjectivities and bodies. The course reveals, examines and unsettles the prison-punishment nexus through critical engagement with a range of interdisciplinary empirical and theoretical literatures.
