    Expanded Course Description

Through the analysis of a selection of plays from the 17th to 20th centuries, each representing a period and a new step in the evolution of theatre, we will study different aspects of French theatre through the ages. We will situate the plays in their literary, historical and cultural contexts, identifying the unique characteristics that make them masterpieces of the French theatrical tradition.

The literary analysis of this group of plays that marked French dramatic history from the classical period to the present day serves as the base of the course, which will focus on the connections between the text and various performances of the plays.

How does the text become a veritable performance? How does the interpretation of the director and the choices he or she makes operate in the many facets of the staging (sets, scenography, casting, blocking, etc.), and can they give different meanings to the same text? Students will have the possibility to compare multiple version of a same play and see concretely how the reading of a play becomes a performance on stage.

For those who wish it, the course could include outings to the theatre (Théâtre Français de Toronto) and exercises in staging.
