Focusing on literary methodology, students learn analytical and expository techniques appropriate for examining the quality and context of literary works. Various genres in French literature as well as the literature of the French-speaking world are examined. Prerequisite: AP/FR 1080 6.00 (with minimum grade of C), or through language placement test or with departmental permission. Course credit exclusions: GL/FRAN 2335 6.00.

Through the study of a variety of texts and using a modern approach, this course aims to introduce students to the methods of textual analysis, enabling them to grasp the specificity of literary language and by the same token attain a greater knowledge and mastery of the French language. Through a variety of interpretative and discursive techniques, students will develop their critical judgment and learn how to clearly express their ideas.
The works study span all the major literary genres: novel, récit, theatre and poetry. Emphasis will be placed on the specificity of literary language (figures of style, narration, argumentation, versification) as well as aesthetic representation (characterization, representation of space-time, construction of the dramatic thread, poetic reality, etc.). On occasion, we will draw upon audio-visual sources (films, etc.).
This foundational course, mandatory for all students specializing in French Studies, encourages active participation by providing students with the tools and methodologies that will prepare them for courses at the 3000 and 4000-level.
