This course examines the political economy of the modern state from different approaches, with particular attention to the modern fiscal-welfare state, taxation and economic policy, inter-state coordination. This will also include the study of issues of finance in relation to central bank policies, money markets and the funding of governments. The challenges posed by globalization and the new politics of austerity for economic policy and alternate egalitarian policies will also be examined. Course credit exclusions: PRIOR TO FALL 2009: Course credit exclusions: AK/PPAS 4115 6.00, AS/POLS 4114 3.00 (prior to Fall/Winter 2001-2002).
