The Subaltern in Focus investigates the 'subaltern' and why they are often assumed to lack legitimate identity, social and political agency, and societal value. Given their prohibited social presence, how does theory help render the subaltern legible, visible, audible, political or perceivable as a subject? Can a slum dweller, the subaltern of focus in the course, become a global citizen? Pre-requisites: AP/SOSC 1140 9.0 AND one of the following: AP/SOSC 2560 6.00, AP/SOSC 2570 6.00, AP/SOSC 2571 6.00, AP/SOSC 3512 6.00, AP/SOSC 3515 6.00, AP/SOSC 3552 6.00. *Students who have previously taken a SOSC 3005 3.0 or 6.0 MUST contact the course instructor before selecting this course to avoid taking overlapping contents.


Course Start Up

Course Websites hosted on York's "eClass" are accessible to students during the first week of the term. It takes two business days from the time of your enrolment to access your course website. Course materials begin to be released on the course website during the first week. To log in to your eClass course visit the York U eClass Portal and login with your Student Passport York Account.
