This course examines the contradictions underlying the disciplining of dissent in liberal democracies. Through an analysis of various forms of protest and resistance, the seminar interrogates how those engaged in social movements, political projects, and everyday forms of resistance are constructed as threats, and how discourses and practices of criminal law are used to control these threats. Prerequisites: AP/SOSC/CRIM 1650 6.0, AP/SOSC/CRIM 1650 9.0 (or equivalent) with a grade of at least B (6.0).
