Few states in world history have had the global impact of the Spanish crown, which in the 1500s established control over large parts of the Americas and Southeast Asia. This course seeks to explain how this vast assemblage functioned and held together until the 1800s. In particular, we will examine how diverse non-European peoples responded to Spanish rule.

    Expanded Course Description

Few states in history have had the global impact of the Spanish crown, which established control over large parts of the Americas and Southeast Asia during the 16th century. This course seeks to explain how this vast assemblage functioned and held together for so long. In particular, we will examine how diverse non-European peoples responded to, and participated in, Spanish rule. The Fall Term will cover the expansion and stabilization of the Spanish empire during the 16th century. In the first half of the Winter Term, we will discuss how non-Hispanic peoples engaged with Spanish colonial culture; the second half focuses on the empire’s disintegration over the course of the 19th century, with emphasis on the Philippines and Cuba, which Spain held until 1898.
