This course will focus on a current topic that has important sociological dimensions. Topics will vary (e.g., wars, pandemics, environmental disasters, etc.). Drawing on readings that include recent media coverage, the course will situate events in the relevant historical and political context; engage with longstanding sociological approaches to the broader issues; and conduct an in-depth, multidimensional analysis of the topic

    Expanded Course Description

Course Topic: Sociology of Youth

In this course, we examine the scholarship of how youth experience social structures while enacting their agency. Topics included are the influence of family relations, peers, culture, and the contemporary debates about the nature and parameters of youth studies. We will discuss sociological theories that focus on different aspects of adolescents’ everyday life. We will also examine the strengths and limitations of different research methods frequently mobilized to conduct research with adolescents and their families.
