Calendar Description / Prerequisite / Co-Requisite

Slums and the Subaltern investigates the 'subaltern' and why they are often assumed to lack legitimate identity, social and political agency, and societal value. Given their prohibited social presence, how does theory help render the subaltern legible, visible, audible, political or perceivable as a subject? Can a slum dweller, the subaltern of focus in the course, become a global citizen? This course grapples with each of these questions in order to advance theoretical and practice engagement with the subaltern.
