This course examines linguistic landscapes in public spaces to understand how language reflects social practices, values, histories, and sociocultural diversity. Through experiential learning and community-based research activities, students will explore multilingualism in Canada and global settings, learn how languages represent migration and local communities, and make connections to their personal experiences. Prerequisites: 6.0 credits from any 1000-level ESL Courses (AP/ESL 1000 6.00, 1200 6.00, 1450 6.00 OR AP/ESL 1010 3.00 and AP/ESL 1015 3.00Open to: undergraduate students from an ESL background Not open to: Undergraduate students who speak English with native proficiency
Course Start Up
Course Websites hosted on York's "eClass" are accessible to students during the first week of the term. It takes two business days from the time of your enrolment to access your course website. Course materials begin to be released on the course website during the first week. To log in to your eClass course visit the York U eClass Portal and login with your Student Passport York Account. If you are creating and participating in Zoom meetings you may also go directly to the York U Zoom Portal.

No examinations or tests collectively worth more than 20% of the final grade in a course will be given during the final 14 calendar days of classes in a term.
