This course investigates language use for food and foodways in Japanese, drawing on concepts and methods from theoretical linguistics. The topics covered include the structure of menus and recipes, semantic characteristics of the food vocabulary, and descriptions of culinary and gastronomical experiences. The course is taught in English.

No examinations or tests collectively worth more than 20% of the final grade in a course will be given during the final 14 calendar days of classes in a term.
