An introduction to the analysis of spoken and written texts in context. Issues examined include: the relation between linguistic form and function; the relation between text and context; and the question of 'textuality' (distinguishing a randomly-ordered set of sentences from a coherent 'text'). Approaches to discourse analysis covered include speech act theory, interactional sociolinguistics, critical discourse analysis and conversation analysis. Prerequisite: AP/LING 1000 6.00 or AP/LING 2060 6.00. Course credit exclusions: GL/EN 4608 3.00, GL/LIN 4608 3.00.
