Calendar Description / Prerequisite / Co-Requisite

This course introduces students to an overview of the use of the Japanese language in Japan's current media. It analyzes how and why specific vocabulary, expressions, and styles are used characteristically in the media, such as advertisements, manga, TV shows, and social media. The language is also compared with examples of similar contexts in English. Through analyses, students explore social and cultural aspects (e.g.; gender issues, role language phenomena, and age-related issues) that manifest in media discourse in Japanese.
